Infrared Sauna Side Effects: Risks, Contraindications, Safe Use
An infrared sauna is low risk for most healthy adults, but it is not zero risk, and a few groups should genuinely stay away. Almost every side effect comes from the same place: heat and fluid loss, not the infrared light. This guide covers the common mild effects, who should avoid it or check with a doctor first, where the EMF debate actually stands, and how to use a sauna safely.

Common Mild Side Effects
The day-to-day side effects of an infrared sauna are the ones you would expect from sitting in heat and sweating. They are usually minor, and they almost always trace back to fluid loss or staying in too long. Pushing temperature or duration is the most common reason a pleasant session turns into a headache. Dehydration and Electrolyte Loss
Sweating is the entire point of a sauna, and a single session can produce a meaningful amount of fluid loss. That fluid carries electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) out with it. Mild dehydration shows up as thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, and a dull headache afterward. For most people, drinking 16 to 24 oz of water before and after a session fully covers it. If you sauna frequently, sweat heavily, or eat a low-sodium diet, an electrolyte drink occasionally is reasonable. The risk is higher if you are already on a diuretic, which is covered below.
Dizziness, Lightheadedness, and Overheating
Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, which lowers blood pressure. Stand up quickly after a session and that drop can leave you briefly dizzy or lightheaded (orthostatic hypotension). The fix is simple: cool down for a few minutes before standing, and stand up slowly. Overheating, the early edge of heat exhaustion, feels like nausea, weakness, a pounding heart, or feeling unwell rather than relaxed. Heat Rash and Skin Irritation
Trapped sweat under clothing or skin folds can produce a prickly heat rash (miliaria), a temporary irritation of small red bumps. It is not dangerous and clears on its own once the skin cools and dries. Sitting on a clean towel, keeping covered areas minimal, and showering after a session reduce it. People with active eczema or sensitive skin sometimes find heat aggravates flares, in which case shorter, cooler sessions help.
There is no credible evidence that infrared light itself is toxic, carcinogenic, or harmful at the wavelengths and intensities used in consumer saunas. When people get into trouble it is from heat stress and fluid loss, not radiation. That distinction matters because it tells you exactly what to manage: temperature, time, and hydration.
Who Should Avoid It or Consult a Doctor First
This is the part that actually matters. For a healthy adult the side effects above are nuisances. For the groups below, the same heat that benefits most people can be a genuine hazard, and the decision should involve a clinician rather than a blog.
Pregnancy
This is the clearest contraindication. Raising core body temperature in early pregnancy, particularly the first trimester, is associated with an increased risk of neural tube defects, which is why pregnant women are advised to avoid hot tubs and saunas. An infrared session raises core temperature by a degree or more, exactly the effect to avoid. Cardiovascular Conditions and Blood Pressure
Heat lowers blood pressure acutely, which is part of why regular sauna use is associated with better cardiovascular outcomes in healthy populations. But that same drop is a problem if your cardiovascular system is unstable. Uncontrolled hypertension, low blood pressure, unstable angina, recent heart attack (roughly the first six months), and severe aortic stenosis are all situations where you should not use a sauna without a cardiologist signing off. Multiple Sclerosis and Heat Sensitivity
Between 60 and 80 percent of people with multiple sclerosis experience heat sensitivity, known as Uhthoff phenomenon, where a core temperature rise as small as 0.5 C can temporarily worsen neurological symptoms like vision changes, fatigue, and weakness. The effect is usually transient and resolves with cooling, but it makes a sauna an uncomfortable and sometimes risky choice. Anyone with MS or another heat-sensitive neurological condition should be cautious and consult their neurologist.
Medications That Change How You Handle Heat
Several common drug classes interfere with the body's heat regulation or blood pressure response. This is one of the most overlooked risks because people do not connect their prescription to the sauna.
- -Diuretics: already increase fluid loss, so combined with sauna sweating they raise the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
- -Beta-blockers: blunt the heart rate response and can affect how your body adjusts blood pressure under heat stress.
- -Anticholinergics: reduce sweating, which is the body's main cooling mechanism. Less sweating means a faster path to overheating.
- -Vasodilators and some blood pressure medications: stack with the vasodilation from heat and can cause pronounced blood pressure drops and fainting.
- -Sedatives, stimulants, and anything affecting alertness: can mask the warning signs (dizziness, fatigue) that normally tell you to get out.
Alcohol
Do not use a sauna after drinking. This is not a minor caution. In the large Finnish prospective cohorts that established sauna's cardiovascular benefits, the rare cases of sudden cardiac death associated with sauna use were heavily linked to alcohol. Alcohol impairs thermoregulation, worsens dehydration, and stacks its own vasodilation on top of the heat. The combination is the single most consistent factor in serious sauna-related events.
Implanted Devices
People with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, or other implanted electronic devices should clear sauna use with their cardiologist or the device manufacturer first. The concern is twofold: the underlying heart condition that led to the implant, and, for some, sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. This is a confirm-first situation, not a do-it-and-see one.
Contraindications at a Glance
The table groups conditions by how strict the caution should be. Absolute means avoid unless a doctor specifically clears it; relative means proceed only with medical advice and modified, conservative protocols.
EMF Concerns, Evaluated Honestly
Infrared saunas use electric heating elements, and electric currents produce electromagnetic fields (EMF). Marketing on both sides has turned this into either a non-issue or a crisis, and neither is accurate. Here is the measured, honest version.
The scientific consensus is that the low-frequency EMF from household appliances, sauna heaters included, has not been shown to cause harm at typical exposure levels. There is no body of evidence demonstrating that a properly built infrared sauna damages your health through EMF. At the same time, EMF output varies a lot between units, and that variation is real even if the health stakes are modest. A low-EMF design is a reasonable thing to prefer, the way you might prefer a quieter appliance, without believing a higher-EMF one will harm you.
The trap is in how EMF is evaluated. Safety certifications like ETL, UL, CSA, and CE cover electrical and fire hazards, not EMF levels or material off-gassing. A sauna can be fully certified and still output relatively high fields. So when EMF matters to you, ignore the badges and ask for measured numbers at the seated body position, ideally third-party verified, in milligauss (mG). How to Use an Infrared Sauna Safely
Almost every side effect on this page is preventable. The rules are not complicated, and they all come down to managing heat, time, and fluid.
Drink before and after every session. Add electrolytes if you sweat heavily or sauna frequently.
Start short and build up. If you are new to heat, lower temperature and shorter time first.
Sit for a few minutes after, then rise slowly. This prevents the post-session dizziness from low blood pressure.
Nausea, pounding heart, weakness, or feeling unwell rather than relaxed mean exit now and rehydrate.
