Infrared sauna capacity ratings are set by the manufacturer, not an independent body. A "3-person" label means the bench is physically long enough for three adults to be seated simultaneously - it says nothing about elbow room, comfort duration, or whether the heater array is sized to warm three bodies effectively.

What to look for in a 3-person sauna
At this capacity tier, the buying decision hinges on how you plan to actually use the sauna. A 3-person sauna used primarily by two adults is a different proposition from one used as a genuine family unit or shared with guests regularly.
Interior width is the key measurement

Models with only back-wall heaters (some budget units) will not heat the cabin evenly or quickly enough with three occupants adding body mass and heat absorption. Wattage and heat-up reality
A 3-person cabin requires more wattage than a 2-person to compensate for larger air volume and wall surface area. The Maxxus MX-K306 at 2,000W is more appropriate: 35-40 minutes to 120°F, adequate temperature maintenance with the door closed. Premium models at 240V have enough power headroom to hold temperature even during the temperature drop when occupants enter. If you are frequently heating to 140°F+, underpowered models will disappoint.
EMF at larger distances from panels
One practical advantage of a 3-person sauna for a solo or dual user: you are seated farther from the side heater panels than in a narrow 2-person cabin. EMF follows the inverse square law - doubling your distance from a panel cuts exposure to roughly one quarter.
