Not all health claims are equal. A finding from a 20-year cohort of thousands of people sits on firmer ground than a single 12-person trial with no control group. Throughout this page each benefit gets one of three ratings, and the reasoning matters as much as the label.

If you take one benefit seriously, take this one. The cardiovascular case for regular heat bathing is the best-evidenced application of sauna of any kind.

Pain and Stiffness

Heat is a well-established symptomatic treatment for musculoskeletal pain and stiffness, and small studies of infrared therapy in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and chronic low back pain report reductions in pain and improved mobility without adverse effects. The evidence is moderate rather than strong because trials are small and short. As symptomatic relief, though, the mechanism is sound and the downside is low.

This is where marketing outruns science. None of these claims is impossible, but the data is thin, and simpler explanations usually account for what people observe.

Detox

The headline study is the 2010 Blood-Urine-Sweat (BUS) study from the University of Alberta (Genuis et al.), which detected heavy metals including cadmium, mercury, and lead in the sweat of participants. It is real and it is interesting. But it had no control group, used only 20 participants, and measured concentration in sweat, not total body burden cleared. Weight Loss

A single session can drop noticeable scale weight, but most of that is water lost as sweat and it returns the moment you rehydrate. There is a small genuine caloric cost to thermoregulation, on the order of a light walk, but it does not approach the calorie burn marketing implies, and it does not target fat.
